~ Cover design - type in context ~

Cover design is an integral part of publication design as it's the initial information that attracts your audience to buying the book, especially when the book is aimed at a target audience that reacts largely to visual stimulation.

Many art and photography books use a combination of both type and photography to give the audience an idea of the style and aesthetic within the book. This is effective towards an audience looking for a certain style of art/photography.

Others create much more minimal and secretive covers that don't give you an example of the imagery, this is effective as the audience are drawn to look inside the book to see what it's like, encouraging interaction with the book further than a first glance.

The book above has embossed the title into their cover, this gives a high class and delicate look to the overall book and encourages appreciation of the stock and consideration of printing techniques used within the book.

This example uses a minimal type cover printed using UV spot varnish. Using this kind of finish on my cover could be appropriate due to it being used within the book's content.

Ideas

I experimented with different layouts for the cover design, considering different stock uses, finishing methods and the possibility of a wrap around cover.

For the final cover design i've selected a photo that fully uses the word "Hull" as it's most relevant to the books content/title. The image will follow the layout of the spreads inside and bleed onto the back cover. The blue represents a wrap around cover that will be bound over the image exposing it a little. It will be created using the same stock as the insert inside keeping the design consistent.
