~ responsive - penguin brief - design ~

Taking inspiration from psychedelic style poster design for this brief is both relevant to the release dates of the book and movie 1962 & 1971, due to the revolutionary 'hippie' culture producing influential design at the time. It's also relevant to the character profile of Alex, his character finds enjoyment in murder, rape torture as his mind is deluded, a factor that can be represented well within this style of design.

This is an example of a previous design for the book by penguin. This minimal design effectively attracts a certain audience, most likely a creative audience that appreciates minimal design (graphic, architecture, interior). The use of bold colour makes it instantly bold and striking to the audience.

This cover concept is interesting as it allows the reader to be interactive with the product. The outside cover stock is ripped to look like orange peel which is subtly relevant to the books title. The draw backs of this design are it would be difficult to package multiple copies of the book without the 3d area becoming creased and ruined. Secondly 3d elements doesnt fit in with penguins iconic style, small, flat and simple.

Another iconic piece of imagery within the story is when the character Alex has a bloody bandage covering his nose.
This imigery could be applied to a book cover design by becoming integrated with the type behind almost becoming the bandage to the type. Using either photography, vector or illustration I could create this idea. Using a geometric based typeface so the letter O and circular letters are that of an orange.
