~ Responsive - 1st competition research ~

The first brief i've decided to take on as part of responsive is the Penguin Random House UK. The prize is £1000 and the chance for a placement with their design studios which would massively benefit the winners future in the industry and create a strong contact.

Theres 3 categories of which you can enter one to all, submitting just one design for each.

Adult Fiction Cover Award - Title brief: A Clockwork Orange by Anthony BurgessAdult Non-Fiction Cover Award - Title brief: How to Be a Woman by Caitlin MoranChildren’s Cover Award - Title brief: Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kästner
The designs need to be submitted by 12:00 on Wednesday, 9th of March 2016. After initial submissions a shortlist will be created by the judges along with feedback to each designer. The designers who are part of this shortlist are allowed to edit their designs according to the feedback in order for re-submission on the 6th of May for final judging.

The only personal requirements are you have to be either a degree or masters student studying an art based subject.

Previous winners of the Adult cover awards -

My main observation of the past years winning designs is the variation in style. Some are minimal and the subtle design decisions have been informed by the content well. Others are much more illustrative and begin to reveal elements of the story and the designers interpretations of the books visuals. This gives confidence to the idea of creating a design with no aesthetic restraints as there's no underlying theme between each winner.

Children's book previous winners -

On the other hand the children's books are a lot more illustrative in style due to the visual appeal towards the target audience. In conclusion the production and design process for the brief must be informed by the book and audience itself.
