Design practice 1 - speaking from experience - studio brief 4 - OUGD406

For this brief we have to create a piece of design that makes a statement or advice about the first year on this course. I need to decide weather I want to entertain, advise or inform with my piece.

Initial ideas-

  • Entertaining book on drunk experiences next years freshers might come across.
  • Posters with advice to freshers on 'how to get by' or 'to survive'.
  • Guide on how to live with annoying people.
  • Guide on places to visit in Leeds (art, music, pubs...)
  • Illustration of who you'll become after a year on the course. (coffee in hand etc.)
  • A book of messages with hidden meanings?

I like the idea of possibly using photographs of drunk experiences throughout the year. But have the layout inspired by the one above. Go for a scrapbook type feel to relate to how your life over first year will become a series of notebooks and sketchbooks.

This is a piece from the previous brief but has actually inspired the idea to have sensible advice about getting through the first year in red, then hidden in blue have less sensible suggestions like 'oh just go get drunk' & 'well tuesday is boozeday?'.

I love Sagmeister and Walsh's work creating type out of un-usual and imaginative objects. I thought I could create a series of posters saying something like 'embrace the vices and you will survive' and create the type out of things considered to be 'vices' or just things considered to be disgusting. (alcohol, smoking, sex, blood, dirt...)
