~ type in context - final book ~

These images show the title printed in clear gloss ink.

The cover of the final book has been amended, rather than being photographic its a much more subtle and minimal hint at the aesthetic and stock choices within the publication. For this final piece i've screen printed clear base gloss onto the cover to display the title. In commercial production this would be created using UV spot gloss printing; I chose to do this due to the use of it within the actual publication itself. In this prototype i've used a thicker blue stock for the cover once again for the relevance of the city of Hull being near the sea. In final production all the blue stock would be the same G.F.Smith shade just variations of gsm.

For this second publication I reduced the amount of pages, I chose the most inspiring images from my selection. I felt for an art and photography book I needed to be more selective about the type. Secondly I decided instead of screen printing the gloss onto the images I would use a glossier stock choice for the prototype. In commercial printing I would use the UV gloss but a stock change will have to be enough for the prototype.

Stock types were reduced to 2 different types, one slightly glossy white one for the main book and blue G.F.Smith stock for the insert. In commercial production using 2 types of stock rather than 5 would reduce costs. G.F.Smith paper is luckily very obtainable in most Uk printers.

The overall amended publication is successful as each measurement and dimension is carefully balanced with each other. The blue inserted stock falls perfectly on the edges of the photographs within; it shows consideration of layout that the audience (artists) will appreciate.

The smaller book stops it from looking more like a magazine and much more like a book; increasing its overall value.

Binding was changed to perfect bound, perfect binding looks much more high quality and less flimsy which was a large issue with the first prototype.

Overall this amended publication appears to be much more high quality and fitting to the art and photography book category. The reduction in content and stock choices creates a selective and perfected book. Each element of the production has been carefully selected and tested to ensure if it was to hit mass production is would be successful and all work in balance with each other. I personally feel the most successful element of the book is how the inserted blue stock fits with the photos in the larger spreads, it creates a careful balance and harmony you wouldn't of got without the combination of the two.
